The Function and Adding Method of Coolant for Generator Set May 08, 2023

Diesel Generator Coolant

What's the function of coolant of the diesel generator set?

The coolant, also known as antifreeze, plays a crucial role in maintaining the optimal operating temperature of a diesel generator set. Its primary function is to absorb the excess heat generated by the engine during operation and transfer it to the radiator, where it is dissipated into the atmosphere.

In addition to regulating the temperature, the coolant also prevents corrosion and rust formation in the engine's cooling system. It contains additives that inhibit the growth of algae, rust, and scale, thus prolonging the life of the engine components.

Moreover, the coolant also prevents the formation of ice during the winter months, which could damage the engine's cooling system. It also helps to maintain the engine's performance and efficiency by minimizing the risk of overheating, which can cause engine damage or failure.

How to check and fill radiator coolant in a diesel generator?

Checking and filling the radiator coolant in a diesel generator is an important maintenance task to ensure proper cooling and prevent overheating. Here are the general steps to follow:

Turn off the generator and let it cool down. Never attempt to check or fill the coolant while the engine is still hot.

Locate the radiator and remove the radiator cap. Be careful not to touch the radiator cap or any other part of the cooling system while the engine is still hot, as the coolant can be pressurized and cause severe burns.

Check the coolant level. The coolant level should be between the "low" and "full" marks on the side of the radiator or the coolant reservoir tank. If the coolant level is low, fill it up with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water.

Inspect the coolant. Check the coolant for signs of contamination or deterioration. The coolant should be clean and free of debris. If the coolant is discolored or contains sediment, it may be time for a coolant flush and replacement.

Check for leaks. Inspect the radiator, hoses, and connections for signs of leaks or damage. If you notice any leaks, have them repaired immediately.

Replace the radiator cap. Once you have checked and filled the coolant, replace the radiator cap and start the generator to check for proper cooling. Monitor the temperature gauge and the coolant level regularly to ensure that the cooling system is functioning properly.
