In the near future, the Cummins B, C, and L series will introduce fully electronically controlled diesel engines with a power range of 100-450 horsepower, meeting European No.3 and No.4 emission standards as well as the second and third stage emission standards for non-highway motor equipment in Europe and the United States. This ensures their alignment with the European and American markets in terms of technology and emission compliance.

These guidelines provide important information for the proper application of generator drive engines in AC generator set installations.

STANDBY POWER RATING: This rating is suitable for supplying emergency power during utility power outages. The engine operating at the standby power rating does not have overload capability. It should never be operated in parallel with the public utility. Standby rated engines should be sized for a maximum of 80% average load factor and 200 hours of operation per year, with less than 25 hours at the standby power rating. This rating should only be used during true emergency power outages and does not include negotiated power outages with a utility company.

PRIME POWER RATING: This rating is applicable for supplying electric power instead of commercially purchased power and has two categories:

UNLIMITED TIME RUNNING PRIME POWER: Suitable for applications where the generator set operates for an unlimited number of hours per year with variable loads. The variable load should not exceed an average of 70% of the prime power rating during any 250-hour operating period. The total operating time at 100% prime power should not exceed 500 hours per year. Additionally, a 10% overload capability is available for a period of 1 hour within a 12-hour operation, with a total overload time not exceeding 25 hours per year.

LIMITED TIME RUNNING PRIME POWER: Designed for situations where the generator set operates for a limited number of hours in a non-variable load application, such as power outages contracted with utility companies. The engines can operate in parallel with the public utility for up to 700 hours per year, exceeding the prime power rating.
