Below are maintenance procedures for the Perkins 1106 series engine Generator 

Before conducting any maintenance on the Perkins generator 4000 Series engines, ensure that the engine cannot be started in any way, especially for automatically starting generating sets. The following maintenance schedule provides an overview of the maintenance tasks to be carried out, but please refer to the Workshop Manual for detailed instructions.

This schedule is suitable for engines operating under average conditions. If the engine operates in particularly dirty or dusty conditions, more frequent servicing is required, especially for lubricating oil and air cleaners. Proper and regular maintenance is crucial for prolonging the engine's lifespan.

WARNING! Make sure the engine cannot be started before performing any maintenance, especially for starting generating sets or remote starting engines.

Daily Inspection:

Lubricating Oil Level:

1. With the engine stopped for at least 5 minutes, withdraw the dipstick and wipe it clean.
2. Re-insert the dipstick fully into the sump.
3. After waiting for at least 5 seconds, withdraw the dipstick and check the oil level between the two marks.
4. Repeat this process at least twice until consistent readings are obtained.
5. If the oil level is below the top mark, add the same grade of oil to bring it up to the top mark. Replace the filler plug immediately after replenishment.

Coolant Level:

WARNING! Do not remove the filler cap when the engine is hot. Wear hand protection.

With the engine stopped, remove the radiator cap and ensure that the coolant level is 25 mm (1") below the top of the filler neck.

If the level is low, top up with a solution of water and inhibitor or water and anti-freeze, similar to the one already in the engine.

Leaks:

Visually inspect the engine for fuel, oil, coolant, and exhaust leaks. Repair any leaks as necessary.

Weekly:

Perform the items listed under Daily Inspection.

Air Cleaner Restriction Indicator:

The middle section of the restriction indicator 'A' should remain clear while the air cleaner is in a serviceable condition.

When the filter reaches its contamination limit, the restriction indicator will change to red, indicating that the air filter must be replaced.

After changing the air filters, reset the indicator by pressing button 'B'.

Battery:

WARNING! Wear hand protection when checking the electrolyte level. The battery emits flammable gas. Do not check with a naked flame.

Remove the plugs or 'quick fill' covers and check the electrolyte level, which should be approximately 3 mm above the top of the plates.

If the level is low, top up with pure distilled water. Replace the plugs and wipe the top of the battery clean and dry.

Radiator:

If the engine operates in dirty or dusty conditions, check that the air passages in the radiator are not clogged. Use compressed air to clean them in the opposite direction of the normal airflow.
